About Leno Sillevis (1941)
At an early stage I already took an interest in sculpting and modelling. In the 70’s I started by making animal figures in terracotta. Busy activities (until 2003 I was a teacher of fiscal law at the University of Leiden) prevented me at that time to do more. My interest, however, remained.
From 2000 to 2007 I followed portrait- and figure-modelling lessons at the Volksuniversiteit K&O Leiden. My teachers were Jan van Loon, Paul van Laere and Leontine Sies.
Recently I have been busy making animal figures and portraits.
I have always been interested in the work of more or less classical-realistic sculptors. As far as the portrayal of animals is concerned I wouls name as an example the lively bronze birds in the Bargello in Florence, made by the renaissance sculptor Giambologna, and the works of Les Animaliers, a French group of animal sculptors from the Nineteenth Century.
While making my animal figures it is a continuous challenge for me to show the expression of the individual character of the animal.
